In Mexico, there is not a big culture for donating blood, only 2% of the population charitably donates blood.

The Mexican NGO, “Únete Dona en Vida” performs a herculean task trying to promote the culture of blood donation among the population through various actions that seek to raise awareness, attract more donors and channel donations where they are required.

OBJETIVES –

To develop a digital tool that encourages blood donation, facilitating the process and causing greater participation and interest on the part of the public.

Challenge –

Only 3 out of 100 Mexicans are willing to donate blood, only 3% of donations are charitable. How can we reverse this situation in a digital manner?

The idea –

We analyzed the patterns of blood donations and found two things:

When it comes to trying to help, everyone joins the cause; everyone expresses their interest in helping, but that aid is only symbolic because everything stays in social media.

We live in an era where posting content on social networks is a motivator to do something; it seems that, rather than helping, we just like to help everyone else to be aware.

We know that deep down we all want to be the kind of person who does good. For that reason, we decided to develop something that would unite those two situations in our favor, creating a cycle where you could share your support, and encourage others to help.

How did we do it? –

We developed the app available for major the two major operating systems: Android and iOS.

We managed to create strategic alliances with the IMSS (Mexican Social Security Institute), Red Cross, National Center for Blood Transfusion, and Medical Center Siglo XXI, which facilitate receipt of the donation and, on the other hand, the spread of donations required in these centers.

The launch of the app was driven by a major communication campaign and public relations, in which celebrities and opinion leaders attended, as well as different media that publicize the launch of the app.

CONCEPT –

Thus was born the APP DONA EN VIDA (donate a life), an application where in addition to requesting blood donations, you can also schedule your donation and share your altruism with the world.

This app helps to capture more blood donators as well as challenge and motivate your friends to join the cause. 

“Someone needs a blood transfusion every 4 minutes in Mexico.”

What were the results of the event?

Promoted the culture of donation

To date, the app has registered more than 10,000 downloads. More than 5,000 people have participated in the challenge.

Promote donation culture

Each day the app captures around 150 efficient donations, we have expanded the culture and knowledge about blood donation.

Celebrities united for the cause

More than 40 celebrities joined to support the initiative.

Supported by media

More than 80 different media communications have supported the spread of the app and essentially the mission, “Join in donating life”.
