Context

In a landscape where the number of festivals is growing exponentially, the availability of relevant artists is shrinking, and the booking process becomes a fierce battle in which corporate giants (with millionaire budgets) often defeat independent promoters. The Bahidorá Festival —a benchmark for music, art, and environmental awareness in Mexico, now in its 13th edition— faced this challenge: booking talent without the significant financial resources to compete against corporate offers.

What if, instead of competing with money, the festival used music itself to persuade artists?

Objective

Bahidorá's musical proposal has been key to the success of its 13 editions. However, booking the most talented and innovative artists, both from Mexico and around the world, has become increasingly difficult for an independent festival that lacks the large financial resources to compete against multimillion-dollar offers. We wanted Bahidorá to continue being a benchmark among the most important independent festivals. Therefore, it was vital to find a way to position it within the music scene and among decision-makers: managers, agents, record labels, and media, but above all, among artists, and to make it stand out as the most attractive option for presenting their live music, regardless of the number of zeros in the contract.

The Idea

We started with an insight: how does Bahidorá, an independent festival, compete to book ideal musical talent against so many events worldwide? The answer: we don’t compete. Instead, we created The Booking Album, a unique model in the music industry, an innovative approach to booking artists that focuses on generating more impact, using less budget, and convincing artists by connecting them with what truly matters to them: music.

It all stemmed from a unique opportunity. At the 2024 edition of Bahidorá, Africa Express, a project led by Damon Albarn (the mastermind behind the legendary bands Gorillaz and Blur), performed as the main act. Africa Express is a musical collective conceived as a collaborative platform that, since 2006, unites African artists with musicians from around the world —including Mexico— and seeks to break down cultural and commercial barriers by creating music that celebrates the planet’s cultural richness and diversity.

During rehearsals and sound checks before their performance at Bahidorá, the musicians of Africa Express felt a strong connection with the festival, the attendees, and, above all, the magic of the venue: the paradisiacal Las Estacas Natural Park, on the banks of the Yautepec River, in the state of Morelos. At that moment, they decided to record their performance live; it was a great challenge, but after moving heaven and earth, the festival’s production and the band’s technical team had everything ready to begin recording as soon as the more than 29 musicians took the stage.

Alongside Damon Albarn, we transformed Bahidorá into a conceptual album that captured the spirit of the festival in just 21 songs, recorded live as the music came to life on stage. And that’s how we created the festival’s best calling card for the ears of the world: Africa Express presents: Bahidorá (The Booking Album).

How did we achieve it?

The Booking Album came to life in record time, and to capture every moment on stage, we designed a multi-track recording scheme with the coordination of audio engineers from both Bahidorá and Africa Express.

The album’s musicians are proof of the project’s diversity. In addition to Damon Albarn, figures such as Fatoumata Diawara (Mali), Moonchild Sanelly (South Africa), and Jupiter & Okwess (Democratic Republic of Congo) participated. From the Mexican side, acts like La Bruja de Texcoco, Son Rompe Pera, and Camilo Lara (from Instituto Mexicano del Sonido) shone, contributing everything from festive electronic music to marimba punk and fusions of popular tradition. On the international front, names like Bonobo (United Kingdom) —with his characteristic downtempo— and Nick Zinner, guitarist of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, joined in. The result was a kaleidoscope of genres, from cumbia and sonidero to Angolan kuduro, afrobeat, soul, electronic, punk, and alternative pop. A sonic X-ray of what Bahidorá represents: a meeting point where music blends without borders.

Africa Express presents: Bahidorá was officially announced on May 15, 2025, generating great anticipation before its release on all digital platforms and physical formats (double vinyl and CD). With a cover showing the Yautepec River and interior photos highlighting the beauty of the natural surroundings, the album became a communication tool that transcended the festival itself and showcased Bahidorá’s essence. More than a dossier, it offered a sonic experience that reached the ears of managers, agents, record labels, and music media, and, above all, music lovers and artists worldwide.

Thanks to a tour of major international festivals, where Africa Express and all the involved musicians performed the album, Bahidorá became the first festival to be presented within another festival. Thus, the Bahidorá experience reached new stages and piqued the curiosity of artists, major influencers in the music industry, media, and the public looking for a festival to play, attend, or enjoy.

Other festivals paid to bring the Bahidorá experience to their stages. In late 2025, Africa Express presents: Bahidorá (The Booking Album) was the main act at the International Cervantino Festival in Guanajuato, Mexico’s most important cultural event and one of the most prestigious in the world.

Results

The album was performed by Africa Express at festivals such as Roskilde (Denmark) —one of Europe’s most influential music gatherings— as well as WOMAD (UK), Montreux Jazz (Switzerland), and showcases in Rome, Berlin, London, and Amsterdam. Each performance not only recreated the essence of Bahidorá on stage but also brought it before key managers, agents, media, and artists within the international music industry.

The album received outstanding reviews in prestigious media. The Financial Times awarded it 5 stars, highlighting its freshness and collaborative nature. The Guardian described it as a “multicultural feast that redefines what an independent festival can be,” and Songlines called it “a live masterpiece that captures the essence of a unique encounter.”

In total, 7.6 million streams have been registered on major streaming platforms (Spotify, Amazon, Apple, and YouTube), 248 publications in media worldwide (including articles, reviews, and interviews), and organic amplification joined by the musicians themselves sharing the project on their social networks —including Damon Albarn, Bonobo, Fatoumata Diawara, La Bruja de Texcoco, and Camilo Lara (from Instituto Mexicano del Sonido)— reaching a community of 12 million followers, sparking a digital conversation that positioned Bahidorá in the eyes and ears of global independent music. Collectively, these actions generated 84 million global impressions.

The impact on the festival was immediate: Bahidorá’s social media followers grew by 27% since the album’s announcement, and pre-sale ticket purchases for the next edition, in February 2026, increased by 31% compared to the previous year. Bahidorá solidified its position as Mexico’s most important independent festival and a global benchmark for innovation in how it engages with the industry and artists.
